3 reasons why people like me should not blog!!

Posted in Marketing, Social Media by ideasquare on May 5, 2010

Yes, it is obvious from my profile that I am a bad blogger and an average micro-blogger. This observation of mine about myself is purely based on quantity and not quality :)

While I find it much easier to put my thoughts and insights on micro-blogging platforms such as Twitter and Yammer, somehow my brain cells seem to freeze when it comes to writing a blog post.

So what is it about writing a blog post that terrifies me … Thought it is best if I note them down and share it with others than keep them in my head.

1. Lack of original ideas for Blog Posts

Well I am sure that this is a problem all of us bloggers grapple with. Ideas come and go as flashes in the midst of the most mind numbing meetings and concalls and somehow one is never able to capture them afterwards. What’s worse taking off from someone else’s articles or posts (perfectly acceptable if you ask me ) and develop on them somehow never seems as interesting. Hence the lack of blog posts and the oh so looong gaps between them. Should take the advice of my good friend Vedavyasya ( a more prolific blogger who writes at MattersMind)and write them down while I get these brilliant flashes. Promise to myself: will write them someday.

2. Lack of quality time to think and research

While most of the bloggers take pride in doing a good amount of research to add to their thoughts while tackling a blog post, somehow I never seem to find the time to do so. There is always more research to be done for the professional work that you do, keep yourself abreast of the market trends. Worse, there is always a book sitting on your table and begging to be finished. Bad Time Management, lack of focus or just plain laziness? All of them contribute in their own way for this continuous state of affairs. Must tackle this in my own way!!

3. Fear of criticism

Oh yes, I am sure this one is the biggest reason why many including me never put our thoughts into words. What if my blog post is read by others and ridiculed for its weaknesses. Weaknesses could be many. Badly written, not properly researched or worse no thoughts of any kind whatsoever….these are the kind of feedback/comments that any blogger is terrified of. Hence we show the post hesitantly to a few of our close friends (those who wouldn’t dare to criticize and can be bullied into writing wonderfully positive comments) and thank our stars that at least this post is over and done with. So where is the Self-Confidence that I keep talking about???? And what about the umpteen number of prolific bloggers one is surrounded with ? They seem to produce a post at the drop of a hat ! That is sure to give anyone a super-duper inferiority complex.

Having surprised myself with the fact that I have finally written something that closely resembles a blog post, I can only say this, great bloggers were not born in one day. It must have taken them a combination of years of hard work, focus, talent and ambition to reach the levels that they have reached. I do admire them a lot. So let me drop a few names here. Seth Godin, Chris Brogan, Stephen Dubner (of Freakonomics fame). So I guess, I will get there…some day…after 7 lifetimes…may be!! And yes, I am sure all of you must have realized that I have left the main reason why I should not be blogging. Personal Branding, the main reason why many of us blog or at least try to. I am going to tackle that in my next post.

Well said. Many of us start enthusiastically and after a while it fades away. we become inconsistent and sporadic in our presence. Sometimes not blogging could be discipline issue too :) Like every other hobby it needs to be focused on and practiced religiously

Agree Radha. And as we all know sustaining an initiative is the biggest challenge faced by most of us.
